Architectural Illustration - Independence Hall - Philadelphia PA

I chose Independence Hall in Philadelphia PA for this project. It is located on Chestnut Street between 5th and 6th in the Olde City section of Philly. I used to walk by this building almost every day on my way to work. In fact many times I would cut through Independence Square on my way to take the "El" train to and from home, but, unfortunately, never took the time to tour the building itself. Since 9/11 it is not nearly as accessible. The Declaration of Independence was debated and approved within the walls of this very building, which was constructed between 1732 and 1753. It was designed and built by early American architect Edmund Wooley with help from Andrew Hamilton, a successful Scottish attorney who emigrated to America during the colonial period and became quite famous. It's a very beautiful building with great historic significance for our country.

Type Portraits - Values

I really like the results I got with my "values" portrait of Brandon Lee as the Crow. The Crow was the perfect image to use for this because of the stark, mime-like make-up he wears on his face.

Type Portraits - Line and Shape

This was an interesting project. I found the most difficult type portrait for me to tackle was the "line" portrait. The "shape" portrait had me stumped for a while, but then I started using bigger, blockier letters to create the shapes and abandoned trying to nail down every detail. By making the "shape" image a bit more interpretive, I think it came out really nice.

Easton Area Chamber of Commerce Project

My team developed our idea around the Easton circle and the Easton flag. We noticed that the circle of stars on the flag coincided perfectly with the design of the Easton circle in the center of town. We incorporated the circle of stars into our logo design and added color bars to symbolize the streets that converge at the circle. For our type treatment we went with a classic serif font to conjure up the notion of history that Easton has.

The color bars provided us with an element that could be customized to the piece the logo was being used on. As an example, on our letterhead we extend the vertical to take up the full height of the page.

Mayfair Poster Project

I decided to focus on keeping the message and visuals very simple. I utilized images inside the type convey the attractions of the fair more powerfully. The layout, beginning with the Mayfair logo at the top and ending with the color bar at the bottom, was intentionally done to give the poster a visual flow and frame the elements nicely.

Dreamscape - The Joker Takes Philadelphia!

Philadelphia happens to be one of my favorite cities. I worked in Center City Philly for five years and really grew to love the town. I've been a Batman fan since I was a little kid so it goes without saying that The Dark Knight is one of my favorite movies. For this project I decided to bring the Dark Knight and his nemesis the Joker to the City of Brotherly Love in a rather nightmarish dreamscape scene. I started with an image of Philadelphia at night. From there I brought in a painting of the Joker and used it in place of the night sky. Batman was next. I color corrected him so he had more of a sepia quality that would fit the evening lighting of the city. Fire, smoke and explosions were added to the buildings to give a sense of the city being under siege. Finally, I inserted Batman on a rooftop about to spring into action. Can you spot him?

Time and Place - The Office (Dunder Mifflin Scranton Branch)

The Office is my favorite comedy show of all time and I'm from Scranton so I couldn't resist the chance to join the cast. So here's me with my new boss Michael Scott, some weird dude named Dwight, Pam the cute receptionist and a cocky punk named Ryan.

The project proved more difficult than I thought it would be. I think I took a pretty good photo, but with all the boxes, people and paper surrounding Jim (the character I replaced) it was quite a task making everything look just right.
